Making the Decision to Conquer Your Seasonal Depression

It’s getting to be that time of the year when life just kicks ya right in the teeth. Work is either crazy or it’s slow, your diet is terrible, you’ve been slacking in the gym, your relationships are suffering, you don’t feel like being adventurous, you’ve run out of things to watch on Netflix…

Sound familiar? I FEEL YA. The funny thing is that I thought it was just me. Turns out, a lot of people are going through the same seasonal depression or “funk” that I seem to be stuck in. And you know what? It’s not cool. I’m not down with it. I refuse to be someone’s b%!*ch, even if that “b%!*ch” is the universe. Ya feel?

So I sat down, and I took a good, hard look in the mirror. What in my life could be making me feel so miserable? I have my health, I have my basic needs of food/clothing/shelter, I feel pretty and worthy, I have people who love me. Why do I still feel like crap? Well, I also have been injured, tight on money, and have been having a difficult time with my job. Follow that with a healthy dose of family tragedy and loss– Well, that’ll do it, kid.

When you feel out of control of such major aspects of your life, you’re bound to spiral downward… but if you let it take control of you, you’ll find that you not only fall, but you fall-down-go-boom.

That got me thinking– who else could be feeling the burn? As an actor, I know that I am bound to have highs and lows because I literally have zero control over my employment. My fate is always in the hands of someone else. Then I thought, hmmm, well what about other freelancers? First-time business owners? Tech moguls? Real estate agents? Customer Service Reps? Sales (GASP) agents? Every one of my friends in New York and San Francisco? (Ha!) All of these careers can take their employees on a rollercoaster of emotion, and it can do more than mess up your day–it can mess up your life.

I’m not here to tell you that you don’t deserve “a day” to wallow in your self pity. What I am here to tell you is that you deserve better. By allowing yourself to live in the darkness, you are accepting that you deserve the darkness. You are telling the universe that you’re comfortable in your cocoon, instead of being the beautiful, successful butterfly that you’re SUPPOSED to be. You’re putting out vibes that are pushing happiness, love, and opportunity away from you. You’re punishing yourself.

I know how it feels, and I don’t want to continue the up-and-down pattern anymore. I want to make the conscious decision to be happy and grateful and open to the possibilities of the day. I want to sit up straight like the powerful goddess I am and know that I can accomplish anything. I want to yell, “NOT TODAY, SATAN!”

That is why I’ve created “What the Funk?!” — I want a place to discover and discuss different ways to add color and breathe life back into our daily routines. We’ll explore everything from mindfulness and meditation to diet and exercise, from creating new hobbies to  finding fun new adventures. Let’s make the decision, TODAY, that we can control the light in our lives.  Let’s wake up every day with a tactic on how to tackle the depressions, so that we can be like ‘Yonce and “wake up like this”!

I am so excited to embark on this journey with all of you. We are not alone on this roller coaster ride! Please subscribe and share the pieces that inspire and speak to you, and I look forward to connecting and growing… together.
