7 Easy Ways to Organize Your Home for More Good Vibes

Take a look around. Your life is a mess… and so is your home.

Come on, dude! This is supposed to be your haven/your safe space! And instead, you’re treating it like an abandoned closet. Your clothes are like your feelings– THEY’RE ALL OVER THE PLACE. If you continue to live like this, you’re going to continue living like this: in a forever funk.

According to a 2010 study published in the scientific journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, “women who described their living spaces as ‘cluttered’ or full of ‘unfinished projects’ were more likely to be depressed and fatigued than women who described their homes as ‘restful’ and ‘restorative.'” Men, this goes for you too!

So take a look around, and make some minor improvements to make a BIG impact on your psyche.

To help me with my home organization, I sat down with my friend Whitney, owner of My Positiv Space. Here are some of the tips and tricks that she suggests to help you get your home organized and full of good vibes.

Declutter Your Life. Duh, this is a no brainer. Engaging in the minimalist lifestyle will help you feel refreshed and recharged. In fact, people are so obsessed with decluttering and minimalism that Buzzfeed even occasionally disseminates what they like to call “organization porn” to “appeal to your inner neat freak”!

Be Green. Whitney says having plants in the home is a great way to show off to potential significant others that you can “keep something alive.” In addition to helping your dating life, house plants can also help purify the air, as well as relax and de-stress, according to an article in the Huffington Post.

Learn Your Lines. It turns out, visual lines in the home can have an actual effect on your energy. An article in RCWilley on home design describes horizontal lines as being solid and grounding. It also says vertical lines lift the spirit up and relay security. The article states that horizontal and zigzag lines indicate movement, energy and action, while curves offer relief, softness, and balance. Who knew?!

Try to be Neutral. Why should you start with a neutral color foundation in your home? Besides being refreshing, neutral designs very rarely become boring, like bold color does. Also, by having a neutral foundation, you can change up your space as frequently as you feel. Neutrals inspire creative spaces!

Light it Up. Like a moth to the flame… if you’re not working with natural light, make sure to incorporate enough table or floor lamps. Whitney suggests that you can also go for some mood lighting and energy charging with a Himalayan salt lamp.

Scent MATTERS. Whether it’s an oil diffuser or candles, get your place smelling like your oasis. Whitney likes her essential oil diffuser because she can naturally address her mood/wellbeing, while I prefer using wood-wicked candles to make my place smell like leather and vanilla. Pay Attention to Your Intentions. This one was a real eye-opener for me. Whitney explained that a lot of people don’t pay attention to what they keep under their beds. She said while living in a small space can make under-the-bed an important storage space, you can change your energy by what you store under it. For example, when Whitney was storing her mail and bills under her bed, she felt anxious about money and her job. She instead switched to storing her suitcases under the bed instead, to inspire her to dream about travel and “where she’s headed.” The mind is a powerful thing. If you’re “sleeping on it,” choose wisely. It could make a difference!

So in short, your home is supposed to restore you. Make sure you’re taking steps to make it a place that fills you up instead of taking you deeper into your funk.
